Dniprovsky ecological office of public prosecutor will take care of Dnieper basin recovery

Prosecutor General of Ukraine Viktor Pshonka opened the Dniprovsky ecological office of public prosecutor. Participating in the ceremony were Head of the Kyiv City State Administration Oleksandr Popov, Head of the Kyiv Regional State Administration Anatoliy Prysiazhniuk, as well as prosecutors of Ukrainian regions, the media liaisons department of the Prosecutor Generals Office informed.
«On an initiative of the Head of state and in fulfillment of his instruction, a decision was taken about creation of the Dniprovsky ecological office of public prosecutor. The main task of this newly-created body is ensuring complex supervision over observation of the ecological legislation in the Dnieper River basin,» Pshonka emphasized. The Prosecutor General noted that authorities of the ecological office of public prosecutor are spread to 10 regions of the state: the city of Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Kirovohrad, Mykolayiv, Poltava, Kherson, Cherkasy and Chernihiv regions, on the territory of which the Dnieper flows. According to him, environmental protection for today is one of priority issues in activities of the Prosecutor Generals Office of Ukraine. «Ecological recovery of the Dnieper basin is one of the most important tasks of economic and social development and environmental protection policy of the state,» Pshonka noted. Pshonka, in particular, noted that the cases are on consideration of the Prosecutor Generals Office, instituted on the basis of illegal construction of buildings on the territory of conversation districts and waterside territories, facts of poaching, destruction of green planting, etc. According to him, every such case is a subject of thorough prosecutors examination. And the task of the Prosecutor Generals Office consists in «ensuring lawfulness in the ecological sphere,» the official noted. According to the Prosecutor General, all organizational and personnel preparations have been completed to ensure functioning of the Dniprovsky ecological office of public prosecutor. Note: Close to 30 million citizens use the Dnieper water. It is used on two thirds of the state territory. Every year, close to 7 billion cu m of water is taken from the Dnieper, instead, 900,000 tons of harmful substances are drained into the river. On the Dnieper, the largest in Europe Zaporizhzhia NPP functions. 1,400 landfills and other places for burial of waste are located on the Dnieper shores.
