World leaders have been urged to come up with what has been described as «bold, creative» solutions to achieve sustainable development.
The call has come from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in his message to a special session of the Governing Council of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in Nairobi, Kenya.
Representatives of more than 100 countries, including heads of state, environment ministers, scientists, business leaders and civil society groups gathered yesterday for the three-day meeting, in Nairobi, Kenya.
In his message, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon stressed the need to find long-term solutions to the economic, social and environmental problems the world is facing.
He called for what he said is «profound vision and deep courage» to connect the dots between water, food and energy security, climate change, urbanization, poverty, inequality and the empowerment of women.
The session in Nairobi is the last global meeting of environment ministers before the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development known as Rio+20 to be held in Rio de Janeiro in June this year.
