Cold snap grips several countries in Europe
07.02.2012 08:14 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Several European countries including Sweden, Poland and Germany have recorded their coldest night this year, as a severe winter sweeps across the continent.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) says a cold snap has gripped nearly all of Europe.
The drop in temperatures began mid-January over Western Russia and Siberia.
«The situation is caused by a Siberian high pressure system, we call it a blocking system, it’s preventing milder weather coming in from the West. Effectively we are getting Siberian temperatures for the moment. In the last couple of days what we saw was the cold air coming in from the North that was fed with very strong moisture flux from the Central Mediterranean sea and this caused a lot of snow over parts of South-eastern Europe,» the WMO spokesperson Clare Nullis admits.
