Ukraine reducing gas consumption
26.12.2011 10:31 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Ukraine intends to reduce natural gas consumption by 1518% or 810 billion cubic meters in 2012, compared with 2011, to 4446 billion cubic meters, Minister of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine Yuriy Boiko said in an interview with the Government Courier newspaper.
«Ukraine has plans to significantly reduce the purchase of imported gas in the next five years due to the growth of domestic production, introduction of effective energy-saving technologies and replacement of expensive imported gas with domestic coal,» the minister said. He added, «If recently Ukraine’s consumption of blue fuel was at 64 billion cubic meters, this year it fell to 54 billion cubic meters and next year it is planned to reduce the consumption by another 810 billion cubic meters». The Cabinet of Ministers approved the draft state budget for 2012, sealing in it a price of 416 dollars per thousand cubic meters of Russian gas. Ukraine produces about 20 billion cubic meters of gas per year and, according to its 10-year contract with Russia, it is obliged to redeem annually from the Russian Gazprom at least 33 billion cubic meters. In the case of not meeting this term, Ukraine shall pay to Gazprom a fine.
