Durban conference: “Old and new polluters” urged to confront climate change
28.11.2011 15:39 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Governments around the world are being urged to take a lead in confronting the challenges of climate change.
The call has come from an independent United Nations expert on human rights and international solidarity, as a major United Nations conference on climate change began in Durban, South Africa on Monday.
Representatives of governments and international organizations have gathered in Durban, South Africa to discuss measures to cut emissions of greenhouse gases that cause global warming.
The Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement for developed countries to cut greenhouse gas emissions, expires next year.
The UN independent expert on human rights and international solidarity, Virginia Dandan, has urged what she calls «old and new polluters» to take a lead at the Durban conference.
She says greater cooperation and solidarity are required to face the challenges of climate change such as intensification and the increasing frequency of natural disasters.
Ms. Dandan also calls for global solidarity to tackle the continuing and widening poverty gap as well as a series of food, energy, economic and financial crises.
