UN launches a global conversation on a sustainable and green future
23.11.2011 12:05 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
There is a need to promote sustainable development and resilient cities, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told delegates at a campaign to promote a major climate change conference in Brazil.
Rio+20, the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, will be held in Rio de Janeiro in June next year.
The world is facing a series of challenges, including climate change, increasing carbon emissions and unhealthy oceans, said Mr. Ban.
Rio+20 is a unique opportunity to discuss solutions to these problems, he added.
«We need to have a so called golden thread which will link all these issues. If we are successful in achieving the solution of one of these six or seven issues, then we can achieve the solution for the many challenges, if not all,» admitted Mr. Ban.
Rio+20 will encourage people to engage in a global discussion about how they envision a future that promotes prosperity and improves the quality of people’s lives without further degrading the natural environment.
