Greenhouse gases rose to record highs in 2010
22.11.2011 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The World Meteorological Organization or WMO says the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere hit a new record in 2010.
The document shows that greenhouse gases have also increased daily temperatures world-wide, with extreme temperatures being more likely in the future.
WMO scientists have attributed the continuing rise in levels of carbon dioxide to fossil fuel burning, deforestation and changes in land use.
Jeremiah Lengoasa, Under-Secretary General of WMO, says greenhouse gas levels are on the rise.
«The amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has reached the highest levels since the pre-industrial era. Between 1990 and 2010, there was a 29 per cent increase in the radioactive forcing, in simple terms, the warming of our climate from greenhouse gases. Carbon dioxide, which is one of the long-living greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, accounts for 80 per cent of this increase,» admits Lengoasa.
