Ukraine to tighten food safety control
21.11.2011 13:24 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Within the next two years Ukraine will reform the system of food safety control, the State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service (SVPS) said in a statement.
In particular, lawmakers are going to consider amendments to the law on quality and safety of food and food raw materials. Accordingly, all enterprises whose activity is associated with food will have to introduce a system based on the principles of HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points). This would allow domestic producers to enter international markets and increase exports. HACCP is known worldwide as a food safety management system. That is why the EU demands its presence from producers of importing countries. Therefore, when the amendments to the law come into force, Ukrainian producers who export their goods will have to implement HACCP. Otherwise, processing enterprises will be forced to shut down or convert. The principles of HACCP include increased sales, reduced costs, as well as control over the risks. On average, its introduction into the plant takes up to one year, the State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service said.
