Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have switched the Nord Stream gas pipeline into operation at the solemn start-up ceremony in Germany.
The 1,220-km pipeline that connects the Russian port of Vyborg with the German port of Greifswald through the Baltic Sea will export Russian gas to Europe with the annual pumping capacity of the first branch totaling 27.5 billion cubic meters.
The second branch, which is scheduled for completion next autumn, will boost Nord Stream’s capacity to 55 billion cubic meters per year. Russia’s Gazprom has already signed long-term contracts for gas supply via Nord Stream with consumes in Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Britain and other European countries.
