FAO to start food deliveries to Horn of Africa on Tuesday
25.07.2011 10:12 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO, will start airlifting foodstuffs to those starving in the Horn of Africa area in keeping with a decision that was made during a FAO emergency meeting in Rome earlier today. Foods will be delivered to the Somali capital Mogadishu, to the Ethiopian city Dolo, and the city of Wajir, in the north of Kenya.
The World Bank has made a decision to allocate 500 million dollars to the area that was hit by severe drought. Last week, Russia said that it would allocate an additional 2 million dollars in aid to Somalia.
Over 11 million people in the Horn of Africa have been affected by drought that caused mass-scale famine; thousands of people died or lost their farms and cattle.
