Mexico sees corn, vegetable crop damage from frosts
10.02.2011 10:21 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Mexican corn producers
believe some 500,000 hectares of corn
were damaged by a recent record cold snap, but the government
said on Wednesday it was too early to estimate
losses.
Grains traders in Mexico also said it was too soon to know
the extent of damages in northern agricultural areas hit by the lowest temperatures in 20 years, reaching
minus 17 Celsius in some areas.
Another cold front is rolling over the region now and there
could be up to 12 more cold snaps hitting Mexico before the
end of March, the government said in a statement.
Carlos Salazar, the head of the national corn producers
association, told Reuters the bulk of the suspected damage
was in Sinaloa state, which produces 80 percent of Mexicos
fall-winter corn
