Vistive® Gold and Soymega™: The One-Two Punch of Healthy Oils

Rick Wilkes, Monsanto director of food applications, and Philippe Ballet, Monsanto food business development director, were among a small group of Monsanto representatives on hand at this year’s expo to provide their answers and expertise to the more than 21,000 professionals involved in both the science and the business of food experts from around the world in industry, academia and government.
«Monsanto’s presence at IFT is to increase awareness within the food industry,» Wilkes said. «Especially with food product developers and purchasing managers so we can raise awareness of our quality traits platform including Vistive® Gold Low Saturate/High Oleic soybean oil and Soymega™ SDA soybean oil, formerly known as SDA Omega-3, which is a is a collaboration project between Monsanto and Solae, LLC.»
«The food and agriculture industries must work together to commercialize these types of oils as a viable way to nutritionally improve the food supply in the U.S.,» Ballet added. «There is a critical need to bridge supply and demand, and that requires suppliers, processors and the food industry in general to work together.»
A driving factor behind the development of Vistive Gold and Soymega comes from the recommendations of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans Committee, which calls for an increase of omega-3 in our diets as well as reducing saturated fat and to continue to eliminate industrial trans-fats.
«Soymega™ is the optimal omega-3 for food because you can add it to a broad variety of food products,» Wilkes said. «It maintains its flavor and shelf life. It has stearidonic acid (SDA), which readily converts to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), one of several omega-3 fatty acids used by the body when consumed. Therefore, it allows everyday foods consumers are looking for now to have a source of omega-3 that converts to heart-healthy types like EPA.»
Vistive Gold provides the food industry an oil that can help meet these recommendations. Monsanto continues to conduct product testing that demonstrates these benefits. Vistive® Gold has 85 percent less saturated fat than palm oil, 70 percent less than fry shortening and 60 percent less than conventional soybean oil.
Additionally, Monsanto participated in one of IFT’s Trend and Solution Tours self-guided tours featuring companies that offer products or services related to some of the most significant issues and trends facing the food industry.
