China aims record corn output on kind weather
11.06.2010 11:22 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
China National Grain and Oils Information Centre said the country is looking for a record corn harvest this season thanks to favorable weather in the northeast during last few months.
According to the Centre, corn harvest will this year hit 168m tones, after warm weather allowed seedlings to catch up following a cold-delayed sowing season.
The figure is higher than the 166.0m-tonne harvest that the US Department of Agriculture has pencilled in, forecasts based on expectations of a 1.0% rise in sowings as Beijing encourages corn plantings in the face of high domestic prices.
China National Grain and Oils Information Centre stood by an estimate for last years harvest of nearly 164m tones, significantly higher than those from some other forecasters, who believe the crop was damaged significantly by drought.
The US Department of Agriculture has estimated the crop at 155.0m tones and the International Grains Council at 154.0m tones.
USDA officials have warned that a system of state subsidies may encourage local authorities to over-report production, and many analysts view Chinas strong domestic corn prices, coupled with its return to imports, as signs of tightened supplies.
