Odessa region 2006 sunflower yield may fall due to drought

Owing to drought, this year Odessa region sunflower yielding capacity may reduce to 10 metric centners per ha (initially registered weight), reported State Foodstuffs Department official website referring to Ivan Panchyshyn, Chief of Odessa Regional Agrarian-Industrial Development Main Department (Odessa Regional State Administration). As to Panchyshyn, if weather conditions were more favorable sunflower yield would be 1,5 times higher 15 metric centners per ha. As to Agro Perspective, Odessa region 2005 sunflower yield was 11,6 metric centners per ha (down against 2005 Ukrainian average 12,8 metric centners per ha). As to Odessa Regional Agrarian-Industrial Development Main Department, this year regional sunflower sown areas (2006 crop) total 292,000 ha (practically unchanged as of last year). As to Main Department, Odessa region plans to receive 0.29 mn MT sunseeds crop this year; sunflower harvesting is to start since Aug 20. As to Agro Perspective earlier report, Ukrainian 2005 sunseeds crop totaled 4.706 mn MT (incl. Odessa region 0.339 mn MT). Ukrainian 2004 sunseeds crop was 3.05 mn MT (incl. Odessa region 0.278 mn MT).
