WFP: ‘Three-country crisis’ across central Sahel puts whole generation at risk

20.11.2019 13:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — Violent attacks by extremists «almost every day» in the Sahel nations of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso have displaced nearly one million people and caused emergency levels of malnutrition, UN Radio says referring to the World Food Programme (WFP) report. As to WFP, if nothing is done to tackle hunger within the region, a whole generation could be at risk. Thus, as of now, about 500,000 people have been displaced within Burkina Faso within less than a year, but that figure is likely to reach 650,000 before the end 2019. «A dramatic human crisis is unfolding in Burkina Faso that has disrupted the lives of millions… Our teams on the ground are seeing malnutrition levels pushed well past emergency thresholds — this means young children and new mothers are on the brink. If the world is serious about saving lives, the time to act is now,» WFP Executive Director, David Beasley, admits while commenting on the situation. As to the report, WFP has already helped some 2.6 million people with foods and nutrition assistance within the three Sahel countries; it has warned that in some areas, severe acute malnutrition is skyrocketing and affecting «thousands» of children. As to the report, among those displaced within Burkina Faso, levels of severe acute malnutrition are more than three times the emergency threshold of 2% of the population — at 7.8%.
