WHO: Congo Ebola outbreak spreading but transmission intensity declines
27.08.2019 14:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of now, within the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Ebola virus outbreak continues to prove hard to pin down, but the UN health experts remain positive that they can eradicate it, UN Radio says referring to World Health Organization (WHO) Health Emergencies Programme Executive Director Michael Ryan last week Geneva report.
As to Ryan, for those WHO experts working within Congo, two of the biggest challenges were daily security risks within the north-east, along with the massive movement of people - all potential carriers of the virus.
«At the peak of this outbreak we were tracking 22,000 contacts every day; tracking 22,000 different people every day in an area where people, hundreds of thousands of people move in the province every day, has been a huge challenge», Ryan said.
It is to be admitted, while the disease has spread within the last two weeks, to Mwenga in South Kivu, Ryan insisted that one of the biggest steps forward was the development of vaccines and therapeutic medicines.
As to the WHO latest data, the Congo outbreak has led to total of 2,927 cases of infection and 1,961 deaths.
