Famine conditions "likely" to return within South Sudan some areas next year
08.12.2017 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, while speaking at the UN Security Council, UN Humanitarian Coordinator Mark Lowcock said
famine conditions which were registered this year within South Sudan, are «likely» to return next year if conflict continues, UN Radio reports.
As to him, presently almost two thirds of South Sudanese population are still in need of humanitarian aid, following nearly five years of brutal in-fighting between rival factions.
As to Lowcock, 1.25 million civilians are within the «emergency phase» of chronic food insecurity; almost twice the number compared to last year.
«In early 2018, half of the population will be reliant on emergency food.
The next lean season beginning in March is likely to see famine conditions in several locations across the country,» he said.
