"Overuse and misuse" is focus of World Antibiotic Awareness Week
15.11.2016 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
As of yesterday, the World Antibiotic Awareness Week kicked off, whose key message is that the «overuse and misuse» of powerful antibiotics in humans and animals worldwide means that so-called «superbugs» are developing immunity to the drugs and spreading, UN Radio reports.
In meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) says it hopes to «encourage best practices among the general public, health workers, policy-makers and the agricultural sector.»
Also, the WHO notes it is vital to «change the way we use these medicines».
As to the report, the Week is accompanied by a promotional campaign which uses #AntibioticResistance hashtag and is to feature 13 real-life stories of people around the world who have been affected.
It is to be admitted, each year an estimated 700,000 people die due to drug-resistant infections, mostly in developing countries.
In meanwhile, Dr. Bernhard Schwartländer, WHO Representative in China, admits within 20 years treatments such as chemotherapy or even simple surgery may become impossible.
«We are facing a future where a cough or cut could kill once again,» he notes.
