EU urged to help Greece with refugee crisis
24.07.2015 16:59 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The European Union has been urged by the UNHCR (UN Refugee Agency) to do more to help Greece with an influx of people, UN Radio says referring to the UNHCR report.
As to the report, about 100,000 refugees have arrived in Greece so far this year, the majority from Syria.
UNHCR says it is extremely concerned by developments in Greece, adding that the situation for refugees was continuing to deteriorate.
As to the report, about 60% of those arriving in Greece are Syrians who have passed through Turkey.
There are also Afghans, Iraqis and Africans from south of the Sahara desert.
The refugee agency’s spokesman William Spindler says the European Union needs to provide more support to Greece.
«We are seeing real hardship in the European country. This is happening in the European Union, which includes some of the most advanced economies in the world and yet the situation is continuing to deteriorate. We are not seeing a full and appropriate handling of this situation by the European Union, in fact, in some cases local volunteers and tourists are doing more to help refugees than the Greek authorities,» Spindler admits.
Besides, UNHCR says that Europe also needs to do more to support Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan, which together host more than four million Syrian refugees.
