UN: Countries meeting global immunization target doubled
17.07.2015 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The number of countries reaching and sustaining 90% coverage of children with routine life-saving vaccinations has doubled since 2000, UN Radio says referring to the
new joint report by the UN Childrens Fund (UNICEF), and the World Health Organization (WHO).
The new data also highlight that 65 countries will require what have been called «game changing strategies» in order to meet global vaccination goals.
The report shows immunization rates worldwide in 2014, revealing that 129 countries now immunize at least 90 % of their children with the required three doses of diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, known as DTP3.
It is to be reminded, in 2012, all 194 WHO Member States endorsed a Global Vaccine Action Plan.
They committed to ensuring no one misses out on vital immunizations, with a target of 90% DTP3 vaccination coverage in all countries by 2015.
Earlier this year WHO described the DTP3 coverage target as being «worryingly off-track».
As to the report, presently 6 countries have less than 50% coverage: Central African Republic, Chad, Equatorial Guinea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Syrian Arab Republic.
But the UNICEF-WHO report shows significant progress has been made in the last 15 years.
It is to be reminded, in 2000, 21 million children did not receive even a first dose of DTP, a figure that has now dropped to 12 million.
