UN: "Dangerous new era" in worldwide displacement
18.06.2015 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Worldwide displacement from wars, conflict, and persecution is at the highest levels ever recorded and accelerating fast, UN Radio reports referring to the OCHA (UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) new annual Global Trends report.
As to the report, presently the world faces a sharp escalation in the number of people forced to flee their homes, with almost 60 million people displaced at the end of 2014 compared to 51 million a year earlier.
Reportedly, one in every 122 humans is now either a refugee, internally displaced, or seeking asylum.
As to the report, the main acceleration has appeared in early 2011 when war erupted in Syria, propelling it into becoming the worlds single largest driver of displacement.
However, at same time the UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres says presently the world also faces huge shortages of funding and wide gaps in what he calls the «global regime for protecting victims of war», and so people are being abandoned.
«We dont have the capacity, and essentially we dont have the resources to support all the victims of conflict around the world and to provide them with the very minimum level of protection and assistance. We are no longer able to pick up the pieces,» Mr. Guterres stresses.
Besides, the UNHCR report also shows that almost nine out of every 10 refugees are in countries considered economically less developed.
