Investing in Neglected Tropical Diseases will take more than foreign aid

While some progress has been made to combat Neglected Tropical Diseases, more people need access to preventative care and treatments, UN Radio says referring to the World Health Organization (WHO) Thurs report.
As to the report, these diseases include leprosy, river blindness and elephantiasis, and thrive mainly among the poorest populations.
The report says an increased domestic investment is needed to fight the 17 diseases it prioritizes.
It is to be admitted, each year WHO measures how countries are progressing to control or eliminate Neglected Tropical Diseases (which are endemic in 149 countries).
Its findings are being presented in a new report called «investing to overcome the global impact of Neglected Tropical Diseases».
This year, the focus is on what it will take to meet targets set for 2020 and 2030.
In meanwhile, Dirk Engel, Director of WHOs Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases, said an additional US$750 million per year until 2020 is needed to support 1.5 milliard people.
