UN: Geneva talks "prime the pump" for global climate deal
16.02.2015 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Key climate change talks in Geneva have «primed the pump» for agreeing new global targets that could protect the planet, UN Radio says referring to the UN last week Friday report.
As to the report, the discussions in the Swiss city represent one of the last opportunities to craft a document that can be used to ink a legally binding agreement in Paris in December.
Daniel Johnson reports.
Reportedly, after a week of discussions, Christiana Figueres, Head of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said a formal negotiating text had been agreed by 194 member states.
At 86 pages, the new document is now twice as large as it was at the start of this weeks negotiations.
Ms. Figueres admited it was «much wiser» to produce a «Geneva text» that reflected all countries requirements rather than start work on streamlining it, as some observers had expected.
«Independently of however many pages we have, the task of this session has been achieved, which is to move from an informal draft…to the formal negotiating text that will be the basis for negotiations…until we get to Paris,» she said.
