Poroshenko nominates Shokin for post of prosecutor general

The Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has asked Verkhovna Rada to uphold his decision to dismiss Prosecutor General of Ukraine Vitaliy Yarema and appoint Viktor Shokin instead, NRCU reports.
As to the report, the respective draft resolutions have been registered at Verkhovna Rada on February 10 morning. Besides, the President is expected to come to the parliament soon to present his decisions to the parliamentarians.
It is to be admitted, under the Ukrainian Constitution, the President appoints and resigns prosecutor general after agreement of Verkhovna Rada.
Shokin is the first deputy prosecutor general. He has been working as an investigator for especially important cases at the Prosecutor Generals Office of Ukraine since 1998. He chaired the investigation of the criminal cases opened against General Oleksiy Pukach, who was convicted of the homicide of journalist Georgy Gongadze.
