30.01.2015 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Increasingly complex and destructive conflict have made UNICEFs (UN Children’s Fund) job harder than ever, UN Radio says referring to the
UNICEFs recent report.
As to the report, The UN agency plans to use the US$3.1 milliard to help people in countries directly affected by fighting such as Syria but also those out of the media spotlight, such as South Sudan.
Reportedly, UNICEF also warns that funding is needed in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone not only to eradicate Ebola, but also to rebuild primary healthcare systems in the affected countries.
The UN children’s agency has launched its biggest appeal for funds at US$3.1 milliard amid a deadly cocktail of conflict, climate change and disease.
«More and more children are impacted. In the case of Syria, refugees moving into Lebanon and putting an extreme strain on limited basic social services in some of the poorest areas,» the report runs.
Afshan Khan, director of UNICEF’s emergency programmes, admits the
appeal which is more than US$1 milliard higher than last year aims to reach 62 million children at risk in 71 countries.
As to Ms. Khan, the biggest chunk of funding is for Syria, but other troublespots need help too.
Ms. Khan also says it was crucial that aid money was used to give children a future where taking up arms wasnt their only hope.
Another US$500 million is needed to continue fighting the Ebola epidemic in west Africa, she admits.
