17.10.2014 09:39 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The economic empowerment of women is the key to poverty eradication, UN Radio says referring to the senior UN official Lakshmi Puri.
Lakshmi Puri, Deputy Executive Director of UN Women, was speaking ahead of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
The day is observed on 17 October each year to promote awareness of the need to eliminate poverty across the world.
Ms. Puri said there is greater recognition by policy makers of the gender dimension to poverty.
«This recognition that womens empowerment, economic empowerment in particular and a gender responsiveness of social protection measures is the key to sustainable poverty eradication. There have been cases when poverty has been brought down in many countries but then they have relapsed back into poverty. Those gains have been lost. The resilience has not been built because women were not empowered,» Ms. Puri admitted.
This years International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is focusing on identifying and securing the participation of impoverished people in the «Post 2015 Development Agenda».
