Small island nations start "drum roll of action" for key UN Climate Summit
04.09.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Small island nations meeting in Samoa have started a «drum roll of action» ahead of a key UN climate summit in New York later this month, UN Radio says referring to the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) results.
Christiana Figueres has been attending the 3rd UN conference on small island developing states or SIDS on the Pacific Ocean island, at which climate change has been at the centre of discussions.
She says the SIDS have played an important role in setting the stage for the New York Climate Summit.
«This conference actually starts what the Secretary-General calls the drum roll of action. Because that is what he is calling for, is for much more action on climate change and here in Samoa, these small island states have started the drum roll of action that starts with this conference and then moves along and increases to September 23,» she states. .
It is to be admitted, now SIDS are disproportionately affected by the negative impacts of climate change including rising sea levels, extreme weather conditions and temperature variations.
The Samoa conference, which finishes on Thursday, comes just three weeks ahead of the Climate Summit which is expected to build momentum for a worldwide climate agreement.
As to earlier report, the UN Secretary-General had said that SIDS must tell the largest emitters of global warming causing greenhouse gases what action is expected of them.
