Heads of state have not addressed climate issues "sufficiently"
02.09.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Heads of state around the world have not so far addressed climate issues «sufficiently», UN Radio says referring to the UNs Special Envoy for Climate Change report.
As to report, more than 125 world leaders are due to gather at a Climate Summit in New York at the end of September in order to build momentum for a global agreement on tackling climate change.
The Special Envoy, Mary Robinson, says bringing together so many heads of state will make a difference.
«Its very important because heads of state have not addressed climate sufficiently. Their ministers of environment or ministers of energy have been focused. But once you have a head of state focused, it becomes a holistic issue. Its a development issue, its a financial issue, its a moral issue, its a political issue; its all of those issues,» Ms. Robinson admits.
It is to be admitted, Ms. Robinson was talking on the margins of a conference of small island developing states or SIDS currently taking place in Samoa.
Island nations, many of which are low-lying and under-developed are disproportionally affected by the negative impacts of climate change, such as rising sea levels and temperature variations.
The views of SIDS in Samoa are expected to have significant traction at the Climate Summit.
