06.08.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The WHO (World Health Organization) is to hold an Emergency Committee meeting to ascertain whether the ongoing Ebola outbreak in West Africa constitutes a "public health emergency of international concern.
The meeting takes place on Wednesday and Thursday this week, UN Radio says referring to the WHO report.
In meanwhile, this is the first time the WHO Emergency Committee is being convened to deliberate on the Ebola Virus.
Nearly 900 people have died in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria after contracting the deadly virus.
WHO has warned that the Ebola outbreak in West Africa remains precarious with ongoing community and health-facility transmissions of infection and has launched a $100 million response plan.
«WHO Director General is seeking the opinion of the emergency committee on whether this current outbreak presents a public health emergency of international concern. It is does, the emergency committee will recommend to the Director General to declare it a public health emergency of international concern and to recommend appropriate temporary measures to reduce the international spread,» Tarik Jasarevic, the WHO spokesperson in Geneva, admits.
At present, the UN health agency is not recommending any travel restrictions or border closures due to the Ebola outbreak.
