Melnyk considers 2006/07 food grain import inexpedient

Commenting on some Ukrainian experts declarations about possible grain import due to winter crops having perished owing to last autumn sowing campaign unfavorable weather conditions/this winter severe frosts, Yuriy Melnyk, Ukrainian Vice-Premier for Agrarian-Industrial Complex, said he denies 2006/07 food grain import necessity.
Melnyk made it known Cabinet respectfully regards declarations of experts who analyze market, yet, on its part, Cabinet as well analyzes officially statistics data.
Melnyk declared nowadays domestic market grain reserves are practically same as of 2005 similar, while wheat reserves (incl. food wheat ) are even up against 2005 similar.
Vice-Premier emphasized present food grain stocks not only fully satisfy Ukrainian consumptive requirements until new crop harvesting, yet (even considering unfavorable weather conditions consequences) make it possible to forecast country will have next season big enough grain transitive reserves.
As to Melnyk, winter sown grains future crop (from those areas wherein sown grains have remained safe) will satisfy Ukrainian 2006/07 MY domestic market requirements.
It is to be reminded, as to State Agricultural Products Control Committee data, in total 13.087.100t grain (incl. 5.428.000t food grain) had been declared in Ukraine as of Jan 1, 2006.
Domestic market food grain annual requirement is estimated 67 million tons.
