UN: "Enormous needs" remain in Philippines following Typhoon Haiyan
28.02.2014 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Significant progress has been made in supporting local communities in the Philippines that were destroyed by Typhoon Haiyan but «enormous needs» remain, UN Radio says referring to
the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator.
Nearly six thousand people were killed and around four million lost their homes last November in what was one of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded.
Ending a mission to the country, Valerie Amos said that «a great deal more needs to be done» to help the devastated communities.
« We proved that we could make rapid progress in providing emergency shelter and assistance for people to rebuild their homes, but the outstanding needs for temporary shelter and permanent homes are enormous. The evacuation of people from tents and other shelters that collapsed when two storms passed through the affected area earlier this year underlines the urgency of finding long-term and durable solutions for affected families,» Ms. Amos admitted.
Ms. Amos called on donors and the private sector to continue supporting emergency and longer-term relief and development efforts in the country.
About half of the nearly $800 million appeal for humanitarian aid has been raised so far.
