OSCE to send assessment mission to Ukraine to rebuild trust
25.02.2014 09:59 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
A mission will be sent to Ukraine to assess human rights violations in the country and help rebuild trust between the parties.
Thats what the current Chair of a European security organization told reporters on Monday after speaking to the UN Security Council, UN Radio reports.
The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) is a 57-member body which addresses a wide range of security-related concerns, including arms control, human rights and counter-terrorism.
Didier Burkhalter, who is also the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland, said the findings of the mission could help advance national reconciliation in the country.
«We are currently witnessing a phase of de-escalation in Ukraine. It is essential to support a fair and inclusive process of transition which does not marginalize any part of Ukraine or any community. Ukraine deserves full international attention and support. I am convinced that the OSCE has the necessary tools to assist Ukraine in this difficult phase,» Mr. Burkhalter said.
The Human Rights Assessment Mission would recommend measures to deal with serious violations of human rights allegedly committed during that period, the OSCE Chair clarified.
Mr. Burkhalter added the mission could lead to a potential Human Rights mission and also a potential Election Observation mission.
