UNICEF makes record US$2.2 billion appeal for children in emergencies

One of the largest appeals for emergency aid ever made has been announced by the UN childrens fund, UNICEF, UN Radio reports.
The Geneva-based agency appealed for almost US$2.2 billion to provide life-saving humanitarian assistance in 2014 to 85 million people, including 59 million children.
The funds will be spent on assistance for children who face conflict, natural disasters and other complex emergencies in 50 countries.
Almost 40 per cent of the funding has been earmarked for Syria and the immediate region to deliver life-saving assistance including immunization, water and sanitation, education, and protection.
Launching the appeal, Ted Chaiban, UNICEFs Director of Emergency Programmes said that children are always the most vulnerable group in emergencies, facing a «high risk of violence, exploitation, disease and neglect.»
