New global development goals move a step closer
04.02.2014 09:38 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Countries from around the world are gathering at the UN in New York this week to chart the future path of global development, UN Radio reports.
The General Assemblys Open Working Group is tasked with defining the Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs.
The SDGs are replacing the Millennium Development Goals. Those goals aimed at halving world poverty and which were determined by world leaders in the year 2000 are set to expire at the end of 2015.
Jorge Laguna-Celis a senior advisor on sustainable development in the Office of the President of the General Assembly said that negotiations were moving ahead.
«I think that what we are seeing right now, its first a discussion on how these goals can be constructed. Second there has to be a discussion on priorities, because at the end of the day we cannot tackle all challenges.»
The new set of goals will be set by Member States. Discussion will continue at high-level summits of the General Assembly in September.
