FAO: Healthy people depend on healthy food systems
15.10.2013 09:45 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The UN food agency (FAO) will commemorate World Food Day with events in Rome and around the world on the importance of food systems for food security and nutrition, and food waste, among other areas, UN Radio reports.
This years slogan is Healthy People Depend on Healthy Food Systems.
And the theme is Sustainable food systems for food security and nutrition.
According to the latest figures, a total of 842 million people worldwide are chronically undernourished. Meanwhile, unsustainable models of development are degrading the natural environment, threatening ecosystems and biodiversity that will be needed for our future food supply.
A food system is made up of the environment, people, institutions and processes by which agricultural products are produced, processed and brought to consumers.
FAO says every aspect of the food system has an effect on the final availability and accessibility of diverse, nutritious foods and therefore on consumers ability to choose healthy diets.
World Food Day 2013 is an opportunity to explore these and other issues, and help bring about the future we want.
World Food Day will be observed on Wednesday 16 October. The day is also the anniversary of FAOs founding in 1945.
