Ukrainian Grain Market

AGRO PERSPECTIVE «Ukrainian Grain & Oilseed Market » March 10, 2011`9`(314)

Within reporting week food wheat prices remained rather high due to flour milling integrated plants/several exporters high demand. Food wheat prices were additionally supported by agricultural producers low offer.
It is to be admitted, feed wheat market has been remaining relatively stable within last few months, — what is to be explained with, firstly, foreign purchasers being interested in Ukrainian food wheat rather than in feed wheat and, secondly, Ukrainian domestic market feed wheat offer being very low (as of now, feed wheat is purchased mainly by mixed feeds plants).
As of this week, feed maize prices remained stably high. As earlier, agrarians continued withholding their export quality feed maize reserves in anticipation for higher prices. In meanwhile, experts admit Ukrainian export quality feed maize reserves are rather small (though market demand remains rather high). As of now, experts can’t affirm feed maize prices will start growing; however, experts are quite certain prices won’t go down in near future.

EXPORT

  • Barley

As earlier, within reporting week feed barley market trade activity remained low due to processors slack demand; it is to be admitted, no trader made feed barley purchases after export quoting regime introduction.
Within this week feed barley market purchase prices remained unchanged against previous week, — UAH1,850–2,000 per MT (EXW-ex-elevator, depending on lots/regions).
Within reporting week feed barley US$ purchase prices were US$280–290 per MT (FOB Black Sea ports: Pivdenniy, Illichivsk, Odesa).

  • Wheat

Within reporting week feed wheat was purchased by just few traders. As of this week, feed wheat market offer prices ranged within UAH1,800–1,900 per MT (EXW-ex-elevator, depending on regions).
Within this week feed wheat FOB basis export prices ranged within US$300–310 per MT.
As of this week, domestic market 3 and 2 classes food wheat prices were correspondingly UAH1,950–2,050 per MT and UAH2,000–2,180 per MT; at same time, 3 and 2 classes food wheat export prices (if global market prices conjuncture is taken into account) were correspondingly US$350–375 per MT (FOB Black Sea ports) and US$335–350 per MT (FOB Black Sea ports, depending on protein content).

Maize

Within reporting week feed maize market purchase prices fluctuated depending on shipments regions, contract conditions and seller status (middleman or producer), — UAH1,880–2,000 per MT (EXW-ex-elevator). It is to be admitted, traders were ready to pay UAH2,050–2,100 per MT in ports.
As of this week, feed maize export prices ranged within US$300–310 per MT (FOB Black Sea ports).
Wide ranges of above-mentioned feed maize prices are motivated by fact that trade companies have declared 2 purchase prices levels: high level (for agricultural producers) and low level (for middlemen) after new Ukrainian Tax Code having had come into force.

Processors Activity

As of this week, flour millers kept their food/feed grains purchase prices unchanged against previous week. Market passiveness has been caused by 2 days holidays (held to celebrate International Women’s Day) and exporters grains low demand (in fact, there were just 2–3 exporters trying to purchase grains).
As earlier, within this week agricultural producers continued dictating grains high offer prices in most regions. There were just few agricultural producers which sold their grains in small lots as they needed finances; most agrarians, however, planned to start selling their grains reserves only since early Apr and therefore took wait-and-see attitude.
