Weather forecasters predict corn harvest decline in Ukraine
16.07.2012 11:07 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The Hydrometeorological Center had earlier predicted the corn yield at 22 million tons, but due to drought the yield capacity of the crop will reduce and the harvest will decline to 2021 million tons, Tetiana Adamenko, the head of agricultural meteorology at the Ukrainian Weather Center of the Ukrainian Emergencies Ministry, told the press on Friday.
«Our forecast - 22 million tons of corn, but we will update it and possibly it would be somewhat reduced due to the south-eastern regions of the country. I think it would be 11.5 million tons fewer - up to 2021 million tons,» Adamenko predicted. According to her, not only because of the air temperature, but also soil, which in the south has warmed to 70 degrees, there is «oppression» of plants. «Corn - is a thermophilic crop, but its love for the heat is also limited - 3538 degrees Celsius in the shade in the fields do not give it a chance to develop,» the expert said. Adamenko stressed that the situation in the fields varies. The most favorable weather for the formation of future crop is in the western and northern regions, where it rains, despite the heat.
