FAO highlights importance of sustainable fisheries
10.07.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The Food and Agriculture Agency is calling on governments to ensure fisheries are sustainable.
In a report launched on Monday, FAO finds many fish stocks that it monitors are under pressure, with about 30 per cent being overexploited.
Richard Grainger of the Fisheries Department at FAO says the news about aquaculture, or fish farming, is more positive.
«Aquaculture has been increasing steadily. In fact, it’s the fastest growing food producing sector. And it’s been increasing the contribution to food fish supply to such an extent that fish consumption has been increasing despite the levelling off in production from capture fisheries,» admits Grainger.
FAO says fish and fishery products are among the most traded food commodities, reaching new highs in 2011 which are expected to continue.
A record 128 million tonnes of fish have been produced by the global fisheries and aquaculture sector, according to the agency.
