Prime minister optimistic about future grain harvest
28.06.2012 10:19 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has predicted that the current grain harvest will be sufficient to guarantee the food security of the state. He announced this on Wednesday, while opening a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers. «Despite the difficult weather conditions at the beginning of the year, as well as objective and subjective difficulties and problems, agricultural experts have rather optimistic forecasts about the harvest in 2012. The regions predict that the gross grain harvest will be quite sufficient to fully satisfy domestic needs and guarantee the food security of the state, as well as its export potential,» the head of government said. He said that early grain crops were mostly in a good condition in the country’s northern and western regions and that the yield of grain crops was expected at last year’s level. At the same time, the situation in Ukraine’s southern and eastern regions is slightly worse due to crop losses as a result of severe frosts at the beginning of the year. However, farmers believe that the harvest in these regions will be good, the prime minister said. «This preliminary, rather optimistic forecast sets concrete tasks for us - we should in no way lose even the smallest share of this future harvest. Both the people and machinery must be one hundred percent prepared [for the harvesting campaign]. There can be no problems in providing the necessary means and resources. The harvesting and storage of grain crops are a matter of national importance,» Azarov said.
