Greece is struggling to stop bank float and to stay in the Eurozone
18.05.2012 09:20 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Greek officials say that the nation should clear 23 billion dollar capital boost for its four biggest banks by May, 24, which would pave the way to the return to European Central Bank Funding. Greek banks which were already dealing with shrinking deposits were cut off yesterday by the ECB from direct borrowing pending the recapitalization. Banks are relying on the Bank of Greece’s Emergency Assistance Program for the funding needs now. Meanwhile some politicians are threatening to scrap the nation’s bailout agreement in the wake of the inconclusive election this month.
After the rainbow coalition collapsed, Greece is facing new elections to take place on 17th of June. The Greek proved to have no confidence in any particular party at all. It is uncertain whether this election will form a government able to go through the next round of debt payments. Millions of euros were pulled out of the banks which can lead to the panic amidst the population. And if Greece fails to pay back, it can turn to the local currency of drachm and withdraw from the Eurozone.
