President: Gas consortium issue is extremely topical
20.12.2011 14:09 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Ukraine awaits response of the European Union and Russia regarding the issue of creation of a gas transportation consortium, President Viktor Yanukovych told a press conference Monday after the Ukraine-EU Summit in Kyiv.
«We now offer both Russia and Europe to create a joint gas transportation consortium, and to assume obligations to guarantee the transportation of gas and the preservation of this unique Ukrainian gas transport system in a due state,» he said, ForUm learned from the presidential press office.
According to him, this important issue is extremely topical. «We await the answer from Russia and from Europe, whether they agree to this proposal or not. This proposal is not new. It we formulated back in 2003. But currently, the issue is topical as never before,» Viktor Yanukovych said.
He also noted that the Ukrainian gas transportation system needs modernization and has very serious requirements for maintenance, «which also falls on the shoulders of Ukraine.»
«As for Ukraines relations with the European Energy Community, we accepted its requirements. But, unfortunately, these conditions are violated by the community itself. Ukraine’s interests are harmed,» President Yanukovych said. He said that the decision to build the South Stream and gas storage facilities in Serbia «suggested that the Ukrainian GTS in fact loses its significance, both economic, and political.» «We face the threat of losing the volumes of transportation,» said Viktor Yanukovych.
