The world’s migratory animals need more protection
15.11.2011 09:14 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Action is needed to conserve up to 10,000 animal species that are thought to migrate around the world, according to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
Migratory routes for animals are being increasingly being destroyed by man-made barriers.
Air, water and land routes for the world’s 10,000 migratory animals are increasingly being destroyed, warns the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
UNEP says barriers are threats to animal species that migrate, or what the agency calls «Nature’s Nomads»
These barriers range from roads, fences, dams and power lines to unsustainable hunting or fishing practices.
The agency underscores that protecting migratory species not only benefits the animals concerned but humans as well.
A ten-year programme to restore and conserve 7 million hectares of wetlands in China, Iran, Kazakhstan and Russia, has not only improved conditions for the endangered crane, but has also provided drinking water supplies and inland fisheries.
