High food prices here to stay, says FAO
17.10.2011 08:04 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Millions of people around the world will remain vulnerable, as high food prices are here to stay, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The Agency says continued under-funding of agriculture is the biggest cause of the problem but growing populations and climate change are also contributing to price hikes.
FAO’s Abdessalam Ould Ahmed says the world must find solutions to rising food prices, which are hitting the poorest countries the most.
«For the first time in history, in comparison with the last decade, the pace at which demand for food is increasing is higher than the pace at which we can supply food. So the major question that is currently being debated and will stay with us for many years to come is the world able to continue to feed the increasing population?» emphasizes Ould Ahmed.
