Africa faces challenge to feed itself
10.10.2011 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Africa is facing the big challenge to feed itself and fight poverty, according to the head of a non-governmental organization working to improve agriculture in Africa.
Namanga Ngongi is the President of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA).
He told reporters in New York on Friday that AGRA is working closely with governments, farmers’ organizations and other partners to transform agriculture in Africa.
«There is no challenge greater for Africa than the capacity to be able to feed itself and to free the resources that it is now using to import food that could be grown on the continent so that we will be able to not only use it to increase food security but also to increase the income levels of the large part of the population of Africa, 70 per cent involved in agriculture so that they can double and triple their incomes and contribute greatly to reducing poverty,» said Ngongi.
