FAO: Food insecurity persists despite increase in cereal production
07.10.2011 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Food insecurity is likely to persist in some parts of the world, despite an increase in global cereal production, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
In its quarterly report on food production, FAO says in the current marketing season, global cereal production has increased but that many people cannot afford to buy food.
As to FAO, within this season 2.3 billion tonnes of cereal has been harvested worldwide, up 68 million tonnes than in the same season last year.
The UN Food and Agriculture Organization says cereal prices are declining worldwide as a result of improved production and lower demand.
However, despite of that, the slowdown in economic recovery means many of the world’s poorest people cannot afford to buy food.
FAO says worsening economic conditions could result in higher unemployment and lower spending power for poor people.
