Ukraine harvests 38.4 million tons of grain by September 26

As of September 26, Ukraine harvested 38.4 million tons of grain and leguminous crops from an area of 12.2 million hectares, or 79% of the forecast, which was 12.4% more than on the same date last year, the Ukrainian Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry has reported.
The average yield of these crops in the country was 31.4 quintals per hectare, compared to 26.1 quintals per hectare last year. In particular, farmers harvested 3.2 million tons of corn from an area of 610,000 hectares (17% of the target), with its average yield being 52.8 quintals per hectare, whereas in 2010 it was 40.7 quintals per hectare. Ukraine also threshed 280,000 tons of buckwheat from an area of 250,000 hectares (83% of the forecast), with its average yield being 11.2 quintals per hectare, compared to last years 8.4 quintals per hectare. Farmers harvested 280,000 tons of millet on an area of 140,000 hectares (88% of the forecast), with its average yield being 19.3 quintals per hectare, whereas in 2010 the figure was 15.3 quintals per hectare. Farmers are continuing to harvest technical crops. As of September 26, agribusinesses harvested 5.4 million tons of sunflower seeds from an area of 2.9 million hectares (65% of the forecast), with their average yield being 18.1 quintals per hectare, whereas in 2010 the figure was 15.4 quintals per hectare. Ukraine threshed 770,000 tons of soybeans from an area of 400,000 hectares (36% of the target), with the average yield being 19.2 quintals per hectare (15.4 quintals per hectare in 2010). Farmers harvested 5.3 million tons of sugar beets from an area of 150,000 hectares, with their average yield being 352 quintals per hectare, compared to last years 311 quintals per hectare. As reported, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Trade Andriy Kliuyev said earlier that Ukraine could harvest 5253 million tons of grain in 2011. Earlier, the Ukrainian Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry expected the countrys grain harvest to reach over 50 million tons in 2011, compared to 39.3 million tons in 2010.
