750,000 people are at risk of dying from starvation in Somalia, according to a United Nations independent expert on human rights in the Horn of Africa.
Shamsul Bari told the Human Rights Council in Geneva, on Wednesday, that the famine situation in Somalia has worsened since his last report six weeks ago.
He said the effects of drought and famine, combined with armed conflict, have wreaked what he described as ‘unimaginable havoc’ on the lives of Somalis.
«The latest survey of the Food and Security and Nutrition Analysis of the UN indicates that (of) the four million people currently in crisis nationwide in Somalia, three million are in the south and of these, 750,000 risk death in the next four months. The Food Security and Nutrition Unit has warned that without a major scale-up in interventions the situation is likely to deteriorate further,» stated Shamsul Bari.
