EU ministers expect Ukraine FTA talks to be finalized by the end of the year
28.09.2011 11:42 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
EU Council welcomed the Commissions intention to conclude the free trade area negotiations with Ukraine by the end of the year.
This is the key conclusion of the sitting of the Council of Ministers for foreign affairs and trade held on September 26th, ForUm learned from the press office of the delegation of the EU in Ukraine.
The Council «expressed support for the Commissions efforts in reaching an ambitious and balanced agreement, and welcomed the Commissions intention to conclude the negotiations at the latest by the end of the year,» the sitting’s conclusions say.
The Council was also «briefed by the Commission on the state of negotiations with Ukraine on a free trade agreement, in particular following the meeting on 21 September between Ukrainian vice prime minister Andriy Klyuev and commissioners Karel De Gucht and Dacian Ciolos».
The conclusions also remind that the Commission «is conducting the negotiations on the basis of a mandate granted by the Council in 2007 for an enhanced agreement on economic integration and political cooperation». «It is expected that the establishment of a free trade area, together with the approximation to EU standards, will contribute to the gradual integration of Ukraine into the EU single market,» the Council says.
