15,000 Somali families get food vouchers or cash
14.09.2011 09:38 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Families in famine and drought-stricken parts of southern Somalia are getting food vouchers or cash, in a programme supported by the UN.
The Children’s Fund, UNICEF, says that 15,000 families are receiving the food vouchers of 90 dollars or cash transfers of up to 120 dollars.
The agency says the goal of the food voucher and cash transfer programme is to support vulnerable families who have been priced out of the market by high food prices.
UNICEF spokesperson, Marixie Mercado says there is food in the market right now.
«The hope is that by linking these cash transfers with blanket supplementary feeding which we are doing to try to reach 200,000 families, we can at once save lives and provide a much needed safety net for those most vulnerable families. Right now we have reached 15,000 families so far in Lower and Middle Juba as well as Lower Shabelle and we are working to reach an additional 40,000 families in other famine-affected areas,» states Mercado.
