Surge in donations to feed the starving in the Horn of Africa
29.07.2011 09:07 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
Millions of dollars have poured in over the last few days to fund food aid operations in the Horn of Africa.
The World Food Programme (WFP) says that it’s received promises of more than 250 million US dollars from governments, companies and individuals to help feed the starving.
However the agency still needs more money.
Yesterday the World Food Programme carried out the first in a series of airlifts of emergency food supplies into the Somali capital of Mogadishu.
And this is just a part of WFP’s operation to help up to 12 million people who are in desperate need throughout the Horn of Africa, which is suffering from the worst drought in more than 60 years.
Two hundred and fifty million dollars has been pledged since famine was declared in parts of Somalia a week ago.
However, in spite of such generosity, WFP says that it still needs 252 million dollars to feed the hungry over the next six months.
